Flexport acquires convoy’s technology
Flexport, has acquired specific assets from the now-defunct digital freight network Convoy.
This tactical move does not involve inheriting any business liabilities and includes onboarding a select cohort of Convoy's product and engineering personnel.
The acquisition, the financial terms of which remain undisclosed, was described by Flexport CEO Ryan Petersen as modest in cost relative to the value it brings. This asset purchase does not include Convoy's business or liabilities but represents a significant enhancement to Flexport's service offering, potentially augmenting its technology stack with Convoy's advanced procurement technologies.
Integrating Convoy's technology and select human capital will bolster Flexport's service capabilities, enhancing its trucking logistics services spectrum. This spectrum is set to include Full Truck Load (FTL) and less than Truck Load (LTL), as well as drayage and cartage services, further augmenting its international freight forwarding services with an eventual extension into intermodal trucking.

This strategic move aligns with Flexport's recalibrated focus on financial prudence and operational efficiency. Since Ryan Petersen's reappointment as CEO, there has been a marked shift towards cost optimization, as evidenced by a significant reduction in the workforce and a refocused effort on achieving profitability. Integrating Convoy's technology is expected to reduce carrier costs and streamline operations, contributing to this goal.
The acquisition emerges in the wake of a freight recession that has challenged the industry. This presents Flexport with an opportunity to expand its customer base and enhance its technological capabilities, thereby potentially improving its competitive stance in the marketplace.
Flexport's approach, as outlined by Petersen, appears to diverge from Convoy's strategy and that of larger truck brokerages, which have traditionally sought rapid scale through large accounts, often resulting in complexity and financial burn. Flexport's recalibrated strategy emphasizes operational efficiency, technological integration, and a broader service offering, potentially setting a new standard in logistics and freight forwarding.
